Things Your AC Supplier Won’t Tell You (Part 2)

A Field Guide to Hidden Rules in Air Conditioning Procurement

There’s an unspoken rule in HVAC procurement: when a supplier represents only a single product line, their “expert recommendation” is predetermined by their inventory. Whether your project is a shopping mall, a hospital, or a warehouse, you’ll hear only one solution—the product they carry.

A single-product supplier won’t disclose this because they simply have no alternatives—what you hear will always be “this is the best fit for you.” An air conditioning unit that performs well in hotel guest rooms may be a complete mismatch for a hospital ward requiring precise temperature and humidity control. A rooftop unit that runs reliably in a dry inland climate may struggle with heat exchange efficiency and corrosion resistance in a humid coastal environment.

The costs of this model compound over time. Poor equipment-to-application fit directly results in significantly reduced operating efficiency. To compensate for that 20–30% performance gap, you’re forced to size up, add auxiliary components, and accept higher energy consumption along with more frequent maintenance. While these costs never appear on the quotation, they accumulate year after year throughout the equipment’s service life. Even more insidiously, when equipment operates long-term outside its designed operating parameters, the lifespan of the compressor and critical components is noticeably shortened—not due to product quality defects, but because of improper selection in the first place.

A truly professional supplier should possess multi-product, full-scenario configuration capabilities—matching equipment to your building type, operational requirements, and climate conditions, rather than making a single-choice decision based on stock. They should be able to clearly explain and justify their recommendations: what level of precision a hospital demands, what cost-efficiency a warehouse requires, and what corrosion protection rating a coastal project needs.

This is exactly the approach Olyvent has always taken: we understand your project first, then discuss equipment—never the other way around.
