The right approach is to compare an air-cooled direct expansion (DX) system against a water-based system under identical operating conditions, factoring in site ambient temperatures, piping constraints, electricity tariffs, and local maintenance capability.

1. Operational Risks

At sites with poor water quality or restricted water supply, cooling towers, pumps, water-treatment chemicals, and make-up water are often impractical or prohibitively expensive. Energy is only part of the equation. Also budget for filter consumables, water and water treatment, routine maintenance man-hours, spare parts, component-replacement access, downtime losses, and the cost of an out-of-spec room itself.
